Background

Acholi is an ethnic group of people from the districts of Gulu, Kitgum, lamwo and Pader in northern Uganda living in an area commonly referred to as Acholiland, and Magwe County in southern Sudan. The 1991 Uganda census counted 746,796 Acholi; a further 45,000 Acholi live outside of Uganda.

The Acholi language is a Western Nilotic language, classified as Luo, and is similar with Lango and other Luo languages.

The Acholi are a Luo people, who are said to have come to northern Uganda from the area now known as Bahr el Ghazal in southern Sudan.

The Acholi's traditional dwelling-places are circular huts with a high peak, furnished with a mud sleeping-platform, jars of grain and a sunk fireplace, with the walls daubed with mud and decorated with geometrical or conventional designs in red, white or grey. They were skilled hunters, using nets and spears, and kept goats, sheep and cattle. In war they used spears and long, narrow shields of giraffe or ox hide.

Most Acholi are Protestant, Catholic and, in lesser numbers, Muslim. Nevertheless, the traditional belief in guardian and ancestor spirits remains strong, though it is often described in Christian or Islamic terms.

ACHOLI NEEDS YOUR HELP

Because of the 21st-century genocide against the Acholi people of northern Uganda, the people have been living in Internally Displaced Peoples (IDP) camps that have poor sanitation facilities such that every week people die of poor hygiene related diseases.

The recent and on going floods have worsen the situation as the poor people have lost even the little they had, the prices for necessities have been raised up due to the shortage in supply and some people are feeding on greens or weeds to survive.

God is depending on you to come in and help His people.

Majority of the Acholi are poor and need your help to live a normal life once again. These people have literally lost everything and desperately need help to start a new life of self reliance and not depending on aid as they have been for the past twenty years.

As the Lord leads you please pray for them and if you are able to help in any way please do.

Whatever contribution you make is welcome.
